Configuring your company's business info — name, FEIN, address, business type, and the other details Check requires
Your company's core details live in the Business info stage, the first item on the Company Setup checklist. It used to be a short three-field form; it now collects everything Check, Greenroom's payroll provider, requires to create your company — ten fields in total, eight of them required.
This stage was renamed and expanded
An earlier version of this page described a three-field "Production info" stage (name, FEIN, address) and said production type, contact email, and dates didn't exist as fields. That's no longer accurate — the stage is now called Business info, and production type and an expected-start date are both real, required fields. See the table below for what's actually here today.
Accessing Business info
Open Company setup in the left nav, then click the Business info row to expand it — it's the first stage on the checklist (and the first stop in the setup wizard's stepper). Fields are editable inline; there's no separate "edit mode." Save with the stage's own Save button, or with Save and continue at the foot of the wizard, which saves this stage first and only then moves on. A required field left blank is flagged in red when you try to save — never just because you walked past the stage.

The stage counts as complete once every required field above is filled in — the page shows exactly what's still missing in its status line (for example, "Missing business type, phone").
A gap here follows you to the submit screen
Completing the stage isn't the last time this is checked. If any of these fields is blank — or holds only spaces — a card on the Submit Payroll step says so, names the missing fields, and links back here, with the explicit promise that the run stays where it is while you fix it.
It warns rather than blocks, and it's careful about which claim it makes: your production name, FEIN, full address, and phone are things Check needs before it will approve a payroll, while business type, expected payee count, and expected start date are Greenroom's own requirements with no vendor consequence. Show name lives elsewhere
Show name (e.g., "The Tempest," as distinct from your production company's legal or d/b/a name) isn't part of Business info — it's set in Settings → Company. It appears on reports, exports, and payee onboarding pages.
FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number)
Enter your FEIN in the format XX-XXXXXXX — two digits, a hyphen, then seven digits. Type just the nine digits and the hyphen is inserted for you automatically.
You type: 123456789
It becomes: 12-3456789FEIN is optional when you first create your company (you can add it later), but Business info won't show as complete without one.
Business address
Start typing your street address and matching suggestions appear (address autocomplete, powered by Radar) — pick one and city, state, and ZIP fill in automatically. You can also just type the full address by hand; nothing here blocks saving if autocomplete doesn't find a match or if you skip it. There's no separate "address validation failed" error state — if the fields are filled in, they save. A complete address matters beyond this stage: Check won't let Greenroom create your vendor company at all from an incomplete one, which in turn blocks saving an authorized signer on the Payroll provider stage.
Editing later
Company name, FEIN, and address stay editable indefinitely from Settings → Company, alongside show name, pay frequency, and check start number, saving immediately from a single save bar with no confirmation step.
The newer fields only live on the wizard
Business type, phone, website, d/b/a, nonprofit status, expected payee count, and expected first-payroll date are not in Settings → Company today — they're only editable from the Business info stage of Company Setup. If one of them needs a correction after your company is already approved, go back to Company Setup rather than looking in Settings.
Best practices
- Use the name that matches your official business registration — it's what shows up on union reports and tax filings.
- Add your FEIN as early as possible, even though it's optional at company creation — several other parts of setup (like the Payroll provider stage) work better once it's on file.
- Fill in a real website even if you don't have a production site yet — Check's company create rejects a blank one, and finding that out on the Payroll provider stage is a more confusing place to learn it than here.
- If your address autocomplete doesn't find your building, just type it manually — it still saves.
Common issues
FEIN won't format correctly
Type digits only — the hyphen after the second digit is added automatically as you type. If you paste a pre-formatted FEIN, delete and retype the digits.
Business info still shows incomplete
Check the status line — it names exactly what's missing. City, state, and ZIP fill in automatically when you pick an autocomplete suggestion, but the stage checks the street address line itself, and six other fields (business type, phone, website, expected payee count, expected first payroll, and the address) are required alongside name and FEIN.
Where do I set my production type?
That's on the Production & unions stage now, not Business info — see Union Setup. It's self-service (you pick Broadway, Off-Broadway, or Development), though it locks once Greenroom approves your company.
